20 February, 1895 – Queen Victoria poses in puddle of royal distemper

The stern Empress was not amused when a dodgy vindaloo slipped past the Royal Tasters at Balmoral in the winter of 1895; and it seemed that a long-awaited session with a photographer would have to be postponed. However the queen insisted the portrait be taken, telling her entourage “England expects!” England wasn’t expecting what it got, however. Victoria threw caution and her dinner to the wind, and the ensuing puddle can be seen at the bottom left, spreading regally across the floor towards her private chambers.
